These three live performances from the current season suggest the broad spectrum of the Chamber Chorus’s repertoire in terms of period, style and language:
Omnes de Saba, Orlandus Lassus
Long, Long Ago, Herbert Howells
La Orilla del Mar, Maria Granillo
First is Omnes de Saba by Orlandus Lassus, a leading figure of the Renaissance. Its scoring for two complementary choirs is a format beyond most chamber choirs, but one in which the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus excels.
Next, from Britain in the mid-20th century, comes Long, Long Ago, an extended anthem for Christmas by British composer, Herbert Howells. His intricate harmony and rhythmic dexterity challenge even the most accomplished singers: very few choirs can interpret his dense structure and ecstatic harmonies, but the Chamber Chorus has developed a keen affinity for his writing.
Confirming the Chorus’s advocacy for both contemporary music and women composers, La Orilla del Mar by the Mexican musician, Maria Granillo, demonstrates the linguistic flexibility expected from its singers each season.
